The Mourinho revolution continues at Old Trafford, where experienced midfielder Michael Carrick has signed a new one-year deal to keep him at the Theatre of Dreams until the summer of 2017.

It had previously seemed that Carrick was set to depart this summer, and had been heavily linked with a move to Perth Glory in the A-League in Australia and a number of MLS clubs. Whilst the rumour mill suggested that the English midfielder could be looking for a final pay-day alongside the likes of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, the arrival of José Mourinho has spurred him on to perform a u-turn and delay any such move.

With Mourinho reportedly keen to reunite with Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, Carrick’s decision to stay could be an indication that Chelsea are not playing ball when it comes to transfer dealings with their former boss. With the futures of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Marouane Fellaini still unclear, Carrick will now maintain his presence in the squad for the 11th consecutive season.

Carrick also has 34 caps to his name, with the most recent coming against Spain in November 2015, and will be hoping that one more season at the top level can give him another opportunity.
