'Model pro': Gerrard lieutenant raves about Rangers star

Jermain Defoe put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal to stay with Rangers yesterday and one of Steven Gerrard’s trusted Ibrox lieutenants has reacted on Twitter.

The former England striker endured a difficult 2020/21 campaign. He spent a lot of time injured and made just 20 appearances for the Gers.

Defoe did still manage seven goals, however, with Gerrard still feeling he can do a job for his Rangers team.

The 38-year-old will take up a new role at the club. As well as continuing his playing duties, he will also take his first step into coaching.

Celtic fans left short-changed by Sky Sports once again

In total Defoe has made 72 appearances for the Teddy Bears, scoring 32 goals, with his instincts showing no sign of wavering.

Beale moved to Rangers along with Gerrard in 2018 and he is excited at what the future might hold for the veteran.

Defoe is something of a cult hero when it comes to English football.

He has turned out for Bournemouth, West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Toronto FC during a glittering career.

Now, his future looks to be at Rangers, with coaching a clear intention of his when his boots are hung up.

Defoe still has a part to play at Rangers

Although his new role does combine coaching with playing, Gerrard will still want him banging the goals in.

After missing so much of last season, Defoe will want to prove his worth to Rangers next season.

Having won their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years last season, their first defence is bound to be tricky.

Alfredo Morelos is the club’s number one talisman but Defoe can still be a decent foil.

His record in Scotland is impressive and as a model professional could prove a real asset during 2021/22.

Beale can look forward to working alongside Defoe but first he’s required to do a job on the pitch for one more year.
