Michael Ball has questioned impact of Everton star Gylfi Sigurdsson

Michael Ball has given his criticism of Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson and believes he’s been far too inconsistent since he joined the Merseyside club.

The Toffees signed the attacking midfielder from Swansea City for £45million (BBC) back in 2017 and he’s certainly enduring his most frustrating season to date this year.

He’s scored just two goals and supplied two assists in 29 games across all competitions this campaign.

The Iceland international captained Carlo Ancelotti’s team at the weekend during their crushing 4-0 away defeat to Leicester City and he was very quiet during the contest like so many of his teammates.

Ball has singled out Sigurdsson for criticism after his weekend’s display and has questioned his role within the group as a leader.

“Sigurdsson is going to get questioned [after Chelsea] because of his transfer fee and that’s not his fault but we brought him to the club as a big player, as an international to take us to the next level. Has he done that? I don’t think so,” Ball told the Liverpool Echo.

“He scores some wonderful goals but it’s not consistent enough. As a leader, who the players are looking up to, you bounce off players like that. Consistently Sigurdsson hasn’t performed and you’re not going to get a new contract for turning up two-or-three times a season.

TBR’s View:

Sigurdsson has definitely been on the decline on the last six months and it will intriguing to see whether he features in the long-term plans of Ancelotti, as he looks to push Everton up the Premier League ladder.

The 30-year-old is definitely under pressure to raise his individual levels, as he’s not looked a creative threat from a central or wide left role for much of the season.

He is still under contract at Goodison Park until 2022 and is on a £100,000-a-week deal (Spotrac), so it’s hard to picture him exiting anytime soon.

Sigrdusson’s got the capability on his day to win a game on his own with his tremendous technical ability, but whether his best days are behind him should now be a topic for discussion.
