Micah Richards has suggested that Everton get serious about an unlikely Premier League title challenge this season by signing a striker in the January transfer window.
After a 2-1 away win over Wolverhampton Wanderers this week, Everton find themselves just four points adrift of leaders Manchester United.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side are fifth in the league standings and are eyeing a European finish this campaign.
But pundit Richards feels like this peculiar season is the perfect opportunity for someone different to win the title and told ex-Toffees midfielder Leon Osman that Everton should try sign a forward this month.
“Why don’t you go buy a striker now? There is probably not a better time to go and challenge for the league,” Richards told Match of the Day.
If ever there is a year to get carried away it’s this one, but even the most optimistic Everton fan will surely think the title is a stretch too far this season.
The Merseyside club have to be considered competitions for the Champions League spots though and it shows how far manager Ancelotti has taken them already.
Another striker in the Everton squad would be a smart move, as Cenk Tosun is the only understudy to England frontman Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has 14 goals in all competitions so far this season.
They do have centre-forward Moise Kean on their books and he’s netted 11 goals in 19 matches during his loan at Paris Saint-Germain, but he struggled with just four goals in 19 games for Everton.
