Micah Richards has now shared his verdict on Willy Kambwala’s display for Manchester United against Liverpool yesterday.

Given all of the players missing at the back, Erik ten Hag turned to 19-year-old Willy Kambwala who he does have a lot of faith in.

The centre-back started just his second senior game for the club against Liverpool, and faced no easy task versus the likes of Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah.

And with the greatest respect, a lot of Man United fans must have feared for the worst when they saw the team sheet, given the youngster’s partnership with Harry Maguire was a far cry from their strongest duo of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

However, Kambwala’s display may have changed everything yesterday.

The France youth international thrived in his chance, and made a strong case to be considered in the player of the match contention.

It wasn’t a flawless display, but Kambwala proved all of his defensive attributes, whilst also stepping into midfield when needed.

And that being said, Micah Richards provided his honest verdict on the display on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast.

Micah Richards hails Willy Kambwala for excellent Manchester United display

Speaking on the podcast, Richards was amazed by Kambwala’s composure in a United shirt already, saying he dealt with any nerves well.

He explained: “I want to give a quick shout out to Kambwala at the back.

“He started out quite nervous, as you would expect, not many appearances in the Premier League but to come into a game of that magnitude, it’s daunting for any player and I thought even when he made mistakes he didn’t make a second or a third mistake.

“He composed himself and if you are looking at the whole game overall I thought he was excellent.”

Of course, Willy Kambwala definitely enjoyed a better afternoon than Jarell Quansah who was cruelly punished for his rare error by Bruno Fernandes.

And regardless of who is fit for the trip to Bournemouth next weekend, Richards’ praise perfectly delineates why Kambwala deserves to keep his starting spot for Manchester United.

It’s clearly a year of transition for the club, regardless of Ten Hag’s future, and it could be a very good time to embed Kambwala into the XI.

That being said, Alan Shearer just pointed out something he loved about Kobbie Mainoo’s display yesterday.
