'Breathtaking': Micah Richards says £180k-a-week Liverpool man did something that blew him away before Qatar
Micah Richards has jumped to the defence of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of England’s opening game with Iran on Monday.
Alexander-Arnold was selected by Gareth Southgate despite some patchy performances for Liverpool. An injury to Reece James essentially left a space open and Trent was the one to benefit.
Of course, Alexander-Arnold’s form hasn’t been the best for Liverpool. The Reds have struggled in general, with Trent among the players to not be at his best.
However, writing in his column for The Daily Mail, pundit Micah Richards has said he’s never had any doubt about Alexander-Arnold and he’s delighted he’s been picked.
“I hear people say ‘he can’t do this’ or ‘he can’t defend’. It’s strange. I never hear anyone really praise him for what he can do – and what he can do is breathtaking. He played a pass at Tottenham this month that was as good as I’ve ever seen. I’ve never lost faith in him. I’m delighted he’s in the squad because he improves it,” Richards said.
Alexander-Arnold, who earns a reported £180k-a-week at Liverpool, is unlikely to start ahead of Kieran Trippier at right-back. However, he could be used by Gareth Southgate in tight games, given his dead ball delivery and range of passing.
TBR’s View: Trent Alexander-Arnold can produce for England if needed
There seems to be a solid opinion that Kieran Trippier will play at right-back. However, that doesn’t mean that Alexander-Arnold won’t play a part in this World Cup.
As Richards touches on here, Trent’s passing is out of this world at times. He can pick a pass many others don’t even see and he’s also capable of scoring from free-kicks.
There are 26 players selected for a reason. England have options, and Alexander-Arnold can be confident of getting some minutes at least.
