Micah Richards has shared his honest opinion on Timo Werner’s Tottenham Hotspur debut at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Timo Werner was thrown straight into the Spurs XI after only signing for the club last Tuesday.

The 27-year-old completed a loan switch from RB Leipzig and had just a few days to train with his new teammates ahead of yesterday’s game.

But with Dejan Kulusevski missing out through illness and several key players away on international duty, Werner was handed his first start.

The German forward grabbed an assist at the start of the second half as he set up Rodrigo Bentancur for the goal that ultimately earned Tottenham a 2-2 draw.

Tim Sherwood praised Werner after an encouraging display and feels the forward looked a real threat for Spurs.

And Micah Richards has also singled out Werner for praise on The Rest Is Football.

The former Manchester City defender feels Werner will thrive in Ange Postecoglou’s system and saw some positive signs on his debut.

“It was good to see Werner back as well,” he said. “I think he is one player who will relish in this system.

“Pressing high, he makes really good runs from that left-hand side from out to in, and we know he’s not the most potent in front of goal or clinical, but he adds something to this Spurs squad in terms of energy and he has that pace on the counter.

“I thought Johnson got in some really good positions today but squandered a few crosses but the eagerness from all of them, it is brilliant for us to watch it’s just how far can this take them?

“When they go up against Man City, who are going to dominate the ball, you can’t always play that way. They need a plan B as well.

“It’s great to watch but they will get picked off against the top, top sides.”

Werner certainly looked like a player who was lacking match sharpness yesterday after starting just two games for Leipzig this season.

He squandered a decent opportunity on his weaker foot in the first half after being sent through by Oliver Skipp.

But on the whole, it was an encouraging 80 minutes for the Spurs new boy. He took up some excellent positions and after being replaced by Bryan Gil, Tottenham lacked a real threat in the final third.
