Micah Richards identifies another problem at Tottenham

Micah Richards has told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport that he believes Tottenham Hotspur have too many players in similar positions, and that is ultimately seeing them lack consistency – compared to Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Tottenham are in the midst of misery after conceding 10 goals in two games last week, suffering a 7-2 defeat to German champions Bayern Munich and a 3-0 defeat to Brighton on the south coast.

The club have managed just three Premier League wins in eight league games, while also being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Colchester United. They have just one point from two Champions League matches.

“Spurs have got too many players in similar positions,” Richards said. “They’ve got Lamela, Son, Eriksen, Lucas Moura, they’ve got too many players who want to play in the same position. Lucas Moura scored a hat-trick and then never played (in the final).

“They’re struggling to fit everybody in. Throwing one player in one week, and then another the next week. Liverpool have got consistency. Apart from Milner or Henderson, or Matip or Gomez, everyone knows their jobs.”

TBR’s view – Richards is right, Tottenham need consistency

Richards is bang on. Tottenham are rotating constantly, and it is not just personnel. Mauricio Pochettino has used both a three-man and a four-man defence, as well as a midfield diamond.

Eric Dier, Dele Alli, Victor Wanyama, Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele have all played in midfield, while the aforementioned names have been used out wide. Spurs need to start playing the right players, and keeping it that way.
