Micah Richards says Leeds have a 'sensational' player in their ranks, even better when you see him live
Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips has been praised by Micah Richards.
The Whites midfielder will be an England international for a “very long time”, according to the popular pundit.
Phillips has enjoyed an incredible upwards trajectory in the last few years, culminating in a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad.
And the 25-year-old has taken his superb Leeds form to the England camp, helping the Three Lions reach the quarter-finals.
Richards, writing in the Daily Mail, recalled how he declared Phillips a player to watch at the start of last season.
But he now believes his prediction about Phillips going up “another level” was actually an understatement.
“Before the start of last season, I was asked to pick a player from each club as one to watch,” wrote Richards. “It was one of my first tasks as a Sportsmail columnist.
“For Leeds, my selection was Kalvin Phillips. I’d watched them a lot during their promotion campaign and knew he was good.
“‘It is hard to get on the ball and play in the Championship but he did it brilliantly,’ I wrote in September.
“‘He is known as a defensive midfielder, for tackling and hard work and stuff like that, but don’t put him in a bracket. He can go up another level.’
“I got that last sentence wrong. He’s gone up another two or three levels and his performance against Germany was just sensational.
“When you watch him live in a stadium, you can see there is so much more, how good he is on the ball.
“Phillips is going to be an England player for a very long time.”
Phillips: From Leeds hometown hero to England superstar
Phillips came through the ranks at Elland Road and debuted in 2014 under Neil Redfearn.
He spent his formative years in the Leeds first team as a central midfielder.
However, Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival at Elland Road in the summer of 2018 saw him pushed further back.
Phillips has since prospered to the extent that the Leeds faithful have nicknamed him the “Yorkshire Pirlo”.
His efforts not only helped Leeds get into the Premier League but also enjoy a wonderful first season back.
Making England’s Euro 2020 squad is just reward for his heroics, and hopefully he’ll help his nation to glory too.
