Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn was sent off against Tottenham as he had a moment of madness in the 4-0 loss.
The influential Scottish midfielder absolutely clattered into Destiny Udogie and was given a straight red card to compound a miserable day at the office for Unai Emery’s Villans.
Of course, for Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou, it was a brilliant day and a great way to send a statement about their top four credentials. Indeed, even without McGinn’s red, Tottenham were well in control of the game.

McGinn’s red, though, was the talking point. And while Villa fans thought a yellow might have sufficed, former Villa defender Micah Richards admitted on Sky Sports yesterday there was no way of defending the challenge.
“This is my mate John McGinn and it’s just frustration from the game. I think he knows it’s a red card. Right decision was made. He has been so key for them this season but when you see it back it’s not great at all,” Richards said.
McGinn can have no complaints for Tottenham nightmare
The game was getting away from Villa anyway but there’s no way John McGinn can complain about being sent off here.
The scenes in the dugouts and from the players on the pitch showed what Tottenham thought of the tackle. It was a bit of a shocker and Udogie was lucky to walk away unscathed really.
For Villa, the pressure is now on them really. They’ve been so good all season and it would be a shame for them to throw it away at this stage.
But Tottenham showed their class as well and just like the title race, it looks like the battle for the final top four place is hotting up as well.
McGinn, then, will be lamenting his red card when he gets out of bed this morning.
