Micah Richards defends 'frustrated' Tottenham star, makes Chelsea claim
Micah Richards leapt to the defence of Harry Kane after Tottenham were beaten 3-0 by Chelsea yesterday. He said on Sky Sports (Live PL coverage; 19/09; 18:50) that the player would score for fun had he been snapped up by yesterday’s opponents for Spurs.
Richards was joined by Roy Keane and Graeme Souness on the panel and all three pundits were pretty annoyed with Tottenham’s performance.
After racing out of the blocks and winning their first three games, Spurs have now lost two on the bounce to leave Nuno Espirito Santo with work to do.
Kane has had four attempts at goal in four games this season and is yet to find the net during 2021/22 in the Premier League.
Richards does have sympathy for Kane. He believes his style of play is all wrong and that Kane is frustrated.
He told Sky Sports (Live PL coverage; 19/09; 18:50): “He’s got to be frustrated. You put Kane in Chelsea’s side, he’ll score goals. His body language is so poor because he’s not getting the service that he does for England.”
Why has Kane seen his form drop off for Tottenham?
He could be suffering something of a hangover from last season. Given that he was thought to have his heart set on leaving Tottenham, seeing that deal fall through might have stung.
Kane needs to get back to basics. Tottenham have to rediscover themselves and they need their feared marksman back among the goals.
The 28-year-old has scored in the Europa Conference League qualifiers and also for England but no goals in four games for Spurs is a worry.
Kane is suffering a bit at the moment. As with any centre-forward, however, he is only as good as the service he gets.
The England captain would perhaps be wise to abandon his approach of dropping deep and simply get himself in the box instead.
Kane is world-class and he won’t be kept out of the goals for long. The challenge for Espirito Santo right now is to get the striker back to his very best. And quickly!
