Liverpool have surprised several people this season, including Gary Lineker.
The Reds underwent a lot of changes in the summer. Michael Edwards returned to the club and Richard Hughes was appointed as the new sporting director.
The biggest change of them all was to see Jurgen Klopp leave. Arne Slot was tasked with the responsibility of filling the German’s shoes, and there were people who had a few doubts about him.
However, Slot has silenced all his critics and is on track to achieving incredible success at Liverpool in his debut season at the club.
Gary Lineker’s Liverpool prediction looks silly now
Liverpool have had a phenomenal season so far.
Many people expected the Reds to have their struggles this term following Klopp’s departure. Nobody really thought that they would challenge for the big trophies.
However, Liverpool are on top of both, the Premier League and the Champions League tables. They are the firm favourites to win the English title.
That is the complete opposite of what Lineker predicted before the start of the campaign – he claimed at the time that it would be ‘impossible’ for the Merseysiders to win the Premier League.
In the latest episode of the Rest is Football podcast, Lineker was reminded of his prediction, and he admitted that it was a ‘hopeless failure’.
“We all said top four. I did actually, I said ‘it’s impossible for them to win the league’,” Lineker said.
Richards, who couldn’t contain his laughter, replied: “You idiot!”
Lineker said: “But I don’t mind owning it. It’s okay.”
As Richards and Alan Shearer continued to laugh and mock him, Lineker jokingly added: “I can’t remember saying that. I think someone’s put this in the notes just to wind me up. Surely I didn’t say impossible. I think I said it’s an impossible act to follow Jürgen Klopp.
“Either way, it’s a hopeless failure from me.
“I’m pleased to be wrong because I honestly thought, like perhaps Arsenal with Arsene Wenger, like Manchester United with Sir Alex Ferguson, when someone’s been at a club so long, so dominant at that club, I just thought it would be incredibly difficult. But boy, oh boy, what a job Slot has done.”

What happened the last three times Liverpool were on top of the table at Christmas?
History shows that the team which is on top of the Premier League table at Christmas are more likely to end up as the champions.
Liverpool were ahead of everyone else this term, but this isn’t the first time that the Reds have been the league leaders on Christmas Day.
The Merseyside giants have been in the same position in three of the last six seasons.
| Season | Who was on top at Christmas? | Where did they finish? | Who won the Premier League? |
| 2018/19 | Liverpool | 2nd | Manchester City |
| 2019/20 | Liverpool | 1st | Liverpool |
| 2020/21 | Liverpool | 3rd | Manchester City |
| 2021/22 | Manchester City | 1st | Manchester City |
| 2022/23 | Arsenal | 2nd | Manchester City |
| 2023/24 | Arsebal | 2nd | Manchester City |
Liverpool were on top at Christmas in 2019 and won the Premier League title that season, so they have that experience. But, they have fallen short on two occasions in the last six years.
The Reds, however, have a significant advantage now. They are six points clear at the top and also have a game in hand over their closest title rivals, Arsenal.
Slot couldn’t have wished to be in a better position than the one he is in right now. It’s his title to lose.
