Micah Richards admits he’s ‘anxious’ for Liverpool star Alexander-Arnold, following England omission

Former Manchester City and England defender, Micah Richards, admits he is feeling ‘anxious’ for Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, after his England omission.

The Reds star was surprisingly left out by Gareth Southgate this week, as the Three Lions boss named his latest squad.

Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier were given the nod instead, while Reece James was also among the players named. And Richards, speaking in his column for the Daily Mail, admits to being concerned – if not unsurprised – by Trent’s omission.

Speaking candidly as always, Richards compares the Liverpool man’s situation with one he had himself with Fabio Capello. And Richards believes Alexander-Arnold may have to do something special to get back in Southgate’s plans.

“Sometimes you’re just not the right fit in the opinion of a certain manager. That’s why I’m anxious for what all this means for Trent. Southgate, it goes without saying, is not a man like Capello and has seemingly overseen one of the happiest camps England have ever known,” Richards said.

“But it just feels now that Trent will have to do something spectacular to get back in Southgate’s thoughts for the Euros. Even if he does that, I’m not sure that it will make a difference.”

TBR View: Trent is surely too good to be left out

While you can understand Southgate’s call to an extent, it is a strange one. Alexander-Arnold gives England something they don’t have, in terms of his delivery and set-pieces.

The Liverpool man hasn’t been at his best, for sure. But in recent weeks he has looked like getting back to near the form he showed last term.

Hopefully this is just a temporary blip for Trent and come the Euros, he’ll find himself back in the thick of things.
