Miach Richards raves about 21-year-old Arsenal star after Saturday win
Micah Richards raved about Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares for his display in yesterday’s 2-0 win over Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium.
Goals from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli gave the Gunners a return to winning ways after last week’s drubbing by Liverpool.
Tavares, 21, was handed a start at left-back for the fifth game in succession and he was largely impressive during yesterday’s win.
The talented youngster arrived in North London from Benfica during the summer as direct competition for Kieran Tierney.
He has had to wait patiently for a chance to shine on a regular basis but he’s now looking to grasp the opportunity handed to him by Mikel Arteta.
Richards was desperately impressed and raved about the defender on Match of the Day on Saturday night.
He said: “He was excellent and I’m not just saying that because he’s a full-back, he was genuinely one of the best players on the pitch.
“What I liked about him was he just didn’t stay, every opportunity he went forward and he went forward with quality.
“Krafth had an absolute nightmare against him today, he ends up fouling him several times.
“He’s 21, from Benfica. He’s confident now and he’s having fun. He was brilliant today, he really was.”
Exciting: Tavares can be a big player for Arsenal
He isn’t without imperfection but it’s clear that Tavares can have a bright future at Arsenal.
He is currently keeping Tierney out of the team and that is a statement in itself.
The Gunners face Manchester United next and it will be interesting to see if Tavares keeps his place in the team.
The Portuguese performer is energetic, useful in possession and is capable of bombing up and down the pitch for 90 minutes.
Tavares looks like one of the future but ultimately he’s showcasing to Arteta that he can do a job in the here and now too.
