Mesut Özil smashes Arsenal’s record transfer fee
German International Özil joins Arsenal for a fee belived to be around £42 million
The 24-year old midfielder joined Real Madrid in 2010 from German outfit Werder Bremen for a transfer fee in the region of €15 million. Just three years on, he has signed for Arsenal, eclipsing their previous record transfer of £12 million plus add-ons for Andrey Arshavin.
The German has made over 50 appearances for his national side and featured for Madrid on 32 occasions last season, scoring 9 times and assisting 13 goals. Özil played a key role, creating more chances than any other Los Blancos player with 91.
His exit comes in the wake of Gareth Bale’s arrival at Real, a move which has pushed Özil down the pecking order at the Bernabéu. However, he was prepared to fight for his place but Florentino Pérez felt the transfer fee was just too good to turn down.
At the age of 17 he broke through the ranks of Schalke 04, he was described by manager at the time Mirko Slomka as “the next big thing”. The side came runners-up in the Bundesliga and the German League Cup but he soon fell out with the management and was sold to Werder Bremen.
He enjoyed two years at Bremen making over 70 appearances and scoring 17 goals. Again, he finished as a runner-up in the German Cup but also the UEFA Cup (now known as the Europa League). His performances in the 2010 World Cup impressed the likes Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester United but eventually he signed for Real Madrid in a €15 million deal.
During his time at Real he lifted Primera Division (La Liga), Copa Del Rey and the Spanish Supercup. On a personal level he made the ‘UEFA Team of the Year’ in 2012 and the Euro 2012 ‘Team of the Tournament’.
Former teammate?Xabi Alonso?describes Özil as “the kind of player you don’t find these days,” adding, “He understands the game, sees things, combines and thrives between the lines, unlocking teams,” while Former Holland international?Ruud Gullit?labelled German Özil as a “technically perfect” player who has “total control of the ball” and has “great imagination”
Mesut Özil is exactly what Arsenal fans are after, a player of the highest quality. Arsène Wenger has been a long-term admirer of the German international and he has finally got his man – it is potentially the signing of the summer in the Premier League. The former Real Madrid star will play a huge role in Arsenal’s bid to find silverware. It will take the pressure off Santi Cazorla and his presence will certainly give the side a massive boost.
Could we see a string of transfers from Arsenal on a very exciting Deadline Day?
