Fabian Schar scored twice to earn Newcastle United a 3-0 win over relegation rivals Cardiff City.
Newcastle leapfrogged Cardiff after their 3-0 win which was set up by Schar’s brace.
The Switzerland international impressed in the midweek FA Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers and earned a start for the Magpies.
The central defender, who can play in midfield, produced an impressive all-round performance, capped by his two goals.
On 24 minutes, Schar ran towards goal and scored with a left-footed effort. Then, in the 63rd minute, Schar converted from close range to pick up his second goal.
Schar became the first Newcastle defender since 1996 to score twice in one match, replicating the success of Philippe Albert.
The 27-year-old endeared himself to fans with a heartfelt social media post after the game, where he expressed his joy at scoring for the Magpies.
It could prove to be a vital performance from Schar by the end of the season as Newcastle clambered out of the relegation zone with that win.
They overtook Cardiff, who sit two points behind Newcastle and occupy the final spot in the bottom three.
