Messi, Ronaldo, Lewandowski…Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in elite company and Gunners have to keep him

Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is facing an uncertain future with the Gunners but if the company he keeps is anything to go by, then the club has to go all out to keep him.

The Gabon international netted his 20th of the season in midweek to once again put him in contention for the Premier League’s Golden Boot award. Aubameyang shared the prize last season with Sadio Mane and Mo Salah but will be determined to land it alone this term.

And while the goal was a landmark for him at Arsenal as he became only the second Gunners player in PL history – along with Thierry Henry – to hit over 20 league goals in consecutive seasons, there’s an even more impressive stat behind ‘Auba’s’ goals.

Aubameyang finds himself in elite company in Europe as being one of only four players to hit over 20 league goals in each of the last five seasons. The players alongside him? Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Robert Lewandowski.

It is, of course, an impressive group to be involved in and only highlights further the need for Arsenal to tie him down to a new deal.

Arsenal have to seal Aubameyang contract, who is going to replace him?

While he might be into his 30s now, the cost for Arsenal to replace a player of his quality is going to be outrageous.

The other issue is, that whoever you bring in, you bring in with an element of risk. We’ve seen countless players come to the PL with big reputations and fail.

Yes, Aubameyang is reportedly after a massive contract. But is that too much of a price to pay given his record?

25 in 2015/16 and 31 the year after in Germany, followed by 10 and 13 – split between the Bundesliga and the Premier League in 2017/18 – were followed by last season’s 22 and 20 this year. They are hugely impressive numbers.

Put simply, Arsenal must ensure Aubameyang stays put. Whatever the cost.
