Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes the Gunners could tear Liverpool ‘to shreds’ in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Gunners icon, writing in the Daily Star, believes the Reds have “no legs” in midfield.

And with Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard “sensational”, Liverpool risk losing the midfield battle.

Arsenal host Jurgen Klopp’s side at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, hoping to continue their impressive record.

The Gunners sit top of the Premier League table and have two wins out of two in the Europa League.

Meanwhile, Liverpool sit ninth in the table, having won just two of their seven games in the league so far.

However, the Reds go into the game on the back of a 2-0 win over Rangers in the Champions League.

That said, Merson thinks Liverpool will struggle if they stick with the formation they employed against the Gers.

‘If Liverpool stick with the 4-2-3-1 system they played against Rangers at Arsenal this weekend, then Jurgen Klopp’s side will get ripped to shreds,’ he wrote.

‘They’ve got no legs in midfield with just Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara.

‘Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard are part of the reason why Arsenal have been so good this season. They’ve been sensational.’

‘Liverpool are a magnificent team’ – Arteta

Despite Liverpool’s struggles this term, Mikel Arteta has no doubts about the Anfield side’s quality.

The Arsenal boss was asked what he made of Klopp saying Liverpool are a work in progress.

“Our team is as well,” Arteta told the Arsenal website. “I think you always want to get better.

“You always hear about the weaknesses that you want to improve. Liverpool are a magnificent team.”

And on the subject of Liverpool’s perceived dip in form, Arteta said: “I’m not here to judge what Liverpool are.

“I’m here to talk about what we do.

“I think what they’ve done in the last five years doesn’t need any presentation – it’s clear.

“They’ve been up there in every single competition for the last five years, so credit to them.”
