Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that he believes Tottenham Hotspur are better off with Jose Mourinho at the helm as he gives Spurs a real chance of winning the Premier League title – when compared to Mauricio Pochettino.
Spurs secured a late 1-0 win to beat West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns, as Matt Doherty’s pinpoint cross was headed into the net by Harry Kane on 88 minutes. It was Kane’s 150th Premier League goal, in just 218 outings.
Mourinho, who is renowned for his trophy haul including three Premier League titles, has taken his Spurs side to second in the table after eight matches – a point behind Leicester City. Spurs should have had more.
Late draws to West Ham and Newcastle would have pushed Spurs three points clear, had they held on to wins. Merson says while Pochettino is a good manager, Spurs are better off in their hunt for a title with Mourinho.
“Mauricio Pochettino was a good manager, don’t get me wrong. However, they’ve now got more chance of winning the title because of Mourinho. He knows what you have to do week in, week out and all over again,” Merson said.

TBR’s view – Are Spurs capable of winning a trophy?
The north London club have reached the last eight of the Carabao Cup after a penalty-shootout win over Chelsea. They look strong in Europe and sit in second in the Premier League. They look good for a trophy this term.
Not only are they performing well at the moment, but Spurs also have the depth to cope with a European campaign but remaining competitive to mount a title charge. Yes, Spurs are more than capable of securing silverware.
That is down to Mourinho – largely why Spurs reportedly pay the Portuguese gaffer £288,000 a week (Mail).
