Media laud 'phenomenal' Hugo Lloris after Tottenham defeat

Tottenham Hotspur may have suffered a hugely disappointing loss in the Champions League on Tuesday, but the performance of Hugo Lloris has been lauded, with one of the goalkeeper’s save even described as ‘phenomenal’.

Spurs were beaten for the first time this season this week. Antonio Conte’s men conceded twice in stoppage-time to lose 2-0 to Sporting.

For some, the defeat had been on the cards for some time. Tottenham struggled to create too many chances for their forwards in Portugal. And Sporting asked plenty of questions of the visitors.

In fact, the opening goal would have come a lot sooner were it not for the display of Lloris. The Frenchman made a number of brilliant stops throughout the contest.

He denied Marcus Edwards one of the all-time great Champions League goals. And his save from Pedro Porro’s late strike was remarkable.

In fact, his performance has been given a 9/10 rating by Football London. And clearly, Alasdair Gold felt that he was head and shoulders above any other Tottenham player on the pitch.

“Made a good low save six minutes in from Goncalves and big reaction save from Edwards just before half-time. Made a phenomenal save from Porro late on but could not do much about the two goals,” Gold told Football London.

Meanwhile, I News also noted that Lloris could not be blamed for either goal. And they gave him their highest rating – along with Ivan Perisic.

Hugo Lloris phenomenal despite Tottenham loss

Obviously, Lloris will wish that performance had not come in what proved to be a defeat. But the display reminded everyone just how important the captain remains to their fortunes. Glenn Hoddle also praised his performance after the game.

Lloris has come in for a lot of criticism in recent years. But in the last couple of seasons, he appears to have largely been back to his best.

And it seems that it could be a while longer before Tottenham have to worry about life after Lloris.
