‘What good players do’: McManaman says one Liverpool player is doing ‘brilliant’, despite defeat at Forest

Liverpool might have lost to Nottingham Forest yesterday but Steve McManaman praised the performance of Joe Gomez.

The defender has come into the XI in recent weeks as both a right-back and central defender and in the main, has played well. He delivered a fine ball to get an assist at Rangers, while he was key as Liverpool shut out Manchester City.

And while Forest came out on top in a scrappy game yesterday, McManaman, who was on BT Sport commentary, felt Gomez deserved a mention.

‘He’s responded really well. That’s what good players do. You’re not going to play well every single game, you are going to have blips every now and again and it’s how you respond.

“Whether he plays right-back or centre-back he does a brilliant job. He’s had some wretched luck with injuries in the past. It’s great to see him fit and well and playing,” McManaman said on BT Sport co-comms.

McManaman’s praise came during the game and was in stark contrast to the comments of Robbie Fowler, who felt that Gomez was at fault for Forest’s goal.

TBR’s View: Gomez Doing Just Fine For Liverpool

McManaman was right to praise Joe Gomez here. He has been doing well since he came into the team and despite losing at Forest, he actually did ok in the main.

Had his partner at the back, Virgil van Dijk, took one of a number of chances, he might have been on the winning side anyway.

Gomez is a good option for Klopp and Liverpool and with a defensive crisis looming with England, the former Charlton man might even end up on the plane to Qatar. Certainly, he can do nothing more than keep playing well and as McManaman says, it’s nice to see him fit and back playing.
