McManaman criticises Darwin Nunez during Liverpool win vs Ajax

Steve McManaman criticised Darwin Nunez during Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Ajax, telling BT Sport (broadcast on 13/9; 21:31) that he cannot understand why he fouled Jurrien Timber during the second-half.

The Reds more than played their part in a really intriguing tie at Anfield. Mohamed Salah gave Jurgen Klopp’s men the lead before Mohammed Kudus equalised for the visitors.

Liverpool looked set to be left frustrated after dominating possession and failing to find a winner for some time. But ultimately, when the game looked destined to finish in a draw, Joel Matip produced a towering header to settle the contest.

Liverpool had not always helped themselves. And Nunez missed an opportunity to really impress after coming off the bench.

The 23-year-old came on midway through the second-half. And shortly after, he gave away a foul which really annoyed McManaman.

The striker was running towards the corner, threatening to box Timber in. However, Nunez got a little carried away and ended up tripping Timber up.

It was a needless foul and it relieved any pressure on Ajax in that moment. And it left the commentator expressing his frustration with the Uruguayan.

“What on earth is he doing that for? I know he’s eager to get into the game, but he’s going nowhere, Timber. And he gives him the opportunity to fall over,” he told BT Sport.

You can understand why Nunez did overstep the mark in that moment. Had he won the ball there, he was potentially through on goal.

And the youngster may feel that he has a major point to prove. He has not scored since getting that poor red card against Crystal Palace in August.

But there have been enough promising signs to suggest that it will click for Nunez at some stage. When he did miss chances against Ajax, his teammates were quick to get around him and show support.

Those moments show how desperate he is to impress. At some point, it is going to all fall into place for Nunez at Liverpool.
