Ally McCoist has told talkSPORT that Roberto Firmino is one of the most intelligent players he has seen for some time following the Liverpool star’s performance against Rangers on Wednesday.
The Reds were rampant in the second-half of their Champions League clash at Ibrox. It is remarkable to think now that it was the home side who broke the deadlock through Scott Arfield.

Mo Salah went on to score a rapid hat-trick. Meanwhile, there was a first ever Champions League goal for Harvey Elliott.
McCoist lauds Firmino after Liverpool win
But the 7-1 win was set up by an inspired performance from Firmino. The 31-year-old equalised during the first-half with a close range header. And he latched onto a superb cross from Joe Gomez to put the Reds in front after the break.

Perhaps his most brilliant of the game however, came with a simple touch into the path of Darwin Nunez for the visitors’ third. Firmino presented the chance to Nunez when many probably would have attempted to turn and drive at goal themselves.
Firmino has been outstanding as many around him struggle this season. And McCoist could not have praised his performance at Ibrox any higher.
“I think he’s one of the most intelligent footballers I’ve seen in a long, long time. His game awareness and game intelligence is absolutely second to none. Great footballer,” he told talkSPORT.
“Quick feet, good in the air. But intelligent, sees it, knows where to go, drops into pockets. I think he’s a very, very clever player.”
Firmino’s form has definitely gone under the radar at the start of this campaign. He has now scored eight goals in 12 appearances.
He has already surpassed his tally of Premier League goals from last season. And it would be no surprise if he now goes on to enjoy his best campaign since the year in which Liverpool last won the Champions League – at the very least.
