Ally McCoist has claimed on Alan Brazil’s Breakfast Show on TalkSPORT (08:35, Thursday) that Rangers desperately need Old Firm rivals Celtic need to be in Europe – aside from the coefficient.
Celtic were knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday night after losing 4-3 at home to Romanian champions CFR Cluj, who are managed by former Chelsea star Dan Petrescu.
The Hoops have been demoted to Europa League qualifying, where they will face Swedish side AIK or Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol. AIK won the first leg away from home 2-1. The demotion may affect Scotland’s Europe coefficient.
Rangers legend McCoist stated that he was surprised to see the exit of Celtic from the Champions League, but believes Rangers need Celtic in Europe if the Gers are to stand any chance of winning the Scottish Premiership title.

TBR’s view – McCoist spot on, Rangers need Celtic in Europe
Indeed, Rangers probably have their best chance of beating Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title since returning to the top flight. Steven Gerrard’s side beat Celtic twice last year, and both sides have started well.
But if Celtic are knocked out of Europe completely, they would have the rest and recovery while Rangers would have the travelling to away games, more chance of injury and less consistency in starting line-ups.
Rangers need Celtic to do well in Europe, and the longer they remain in the Europa League, the better it is for Rangers’ title chances.
