Maxwell Statham has posted on Twitter after the centre-back put pen to paper on his first professional terms with Tottenham Hotspur, keeping him at the club beyond the summer.
The 18-year-old, who is the son of former Spurs defender Brian Statham, has been a regular member of the north London side’s Under-18 outfit. He has played 14 times in the Under-18 Premier League.
His solid form for the Under-18’s saw him go on trial with Norwich City, where he played for the Canaries Under-23 side back in February. But he failed Wolves from winning 4-0, and has since signed a new deal with Spurs.
Statham, who can play anywhere in defence but is mostly recognised as a centre-back, posted his delight on Twitter after agreeing new terms with Tottenham.
TBR’s view
Statham needs a run in Spurs Under-23 side in order to show the coaching staff at the Premier League club that he can hack it at that level. One season, there, and then a loan would aid his development.
However, his long-term future at the club looks more questionable. With the presence of Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth, as well as other centre-backs that are likely to join over the next few years, Statham is well down the order.
Staying at Spurs is good for his development, but it is unlikely his long-term future is at the club.
