Max Stryjek could have a Sunderland future after all

Sunderland appear to have sorted their goalkeeper position out this season. Jon McLaughlin has been brought in from Hearts and the 31-year-old has swiftly established as the club’s new number one. With Dutchman Robbin Ruiter now providing back-up, Sunderland will feel they have the options between the sticks to thrive this term.

However, these are not the only two keepers for Sunderland to be happy with. Max Stryjek is currently on fire at National League outfit Eastleigh. A deal made possible by new Sunderland chairman Stewart Donald’s previous links to the Hampshire club, the Poland youth international made the long trip down south to start playing for the Spitfires.

He has certainly been a hit. September’s player-of-the-month after taking over from the retiring Graham Stack, he has now signed a loan extension until Christmas.

So does he have a future at Sunderland?

Signed in 2014 from Polonia Warsaw, he soon found himself on loan at Boston United in 2015. It was not until a loan move to Accrington Stanley last season that he received his first-team appearance, but was injured just nine minutes in.

That looked like being the end for Stryjek but his excellent form with Eastleigh will no doubt have Sunderland considering his future.

Indeed, Sunderland manager Jack Ross told the Northern Echo recently that he wants Stryjek kept on beyond his current deal, which expires next summer.

This loan spell appears to have been the catalyst needed for the 22-year-old to finally make a name for himself at the Stadium of Light. Keep up this form and he could easily be in the matchday squad for Sunderland’s first-team in no time.
