Talented Arsenal youngster Mauro Gomes Bandeira scored his first-ever goal for the club’s’ U21 side against Crystal Palace last night.

The young Gunners returned to the top of the table after coming from behind to pick up a point against the Eagles. Arsenal old boy Malcolm Ebiowei scored for the visitors in 28th minute but Bandeira levelled the scores five minutes before the break.

Mauro Bandeira scores his first-ever goal for Arsenal U21s

Bandeira was handed just his fourth Premier League 2 start of the season at Meadow Park yesterday.

The 18-year-old joined the Gunners from Queens Park Rangers when he was just 13. He has developed brilliantly at Hale End over the years and is now catching the eye at U21s level.

The Portuguese teenager, branded as an ‘all action midfielder’ by Joerge Bird, started in his usual midfield role yesterday and he was excellent. He caught the eye both with and without possession, and he capped off a fantastic first half display with a neat finish to get his side back into the game before half time.

Bandeira’s goal yesterday was his first-ever in the U21 level. He had scored twice before for Arsenal’s U18s, but he’ll remember last night’s strike a lot more fondly.

Arsenal really rate Bandeira highly. In July this year, he signed his first professional contract at the club, and if he keeps developing well, it’s only matter of time before he makes his senior debut.

He could feature next week

Arsenal, as we all know, are short of options in the middle of the park.

Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka are Mikel Arteta’s first choice options in midfield, while Albert Sambi Lokonga is the only natural alternative currently available at the Arsenal boss’ disposal.

With Mohamed Elneny injured and the likes of Charlie Patino and Miguel Azeez out on loan, the likes of Catalin Cirjan and Bandeira could well be called up to the squad when the Gunners take on Brighton and Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup next week.

If things go to plan for Arsenal, Arteta, who has watched Bandeira closely in first-team training sessions on more than one occasion, could well give him an senior opportunity off the bench – just like he did with Ethan Nwaneri earlier this season.

That would be fantastic for young Bandeira.
