Maurizio Sarri reportedly stalling on Lazio offer following Antonio Conte rejection of Tottenham

Maurizio Sarri is reportedly stalling on accepting a job offer from Lazio after Antonio Conte rejected a proposal from Tottenham.

According to Rome publication Il Messaggero, the former Chelsea manager has all but agreed to a deal to join Lazio.

However, this weekend’s news that Conte had turned down an approach from Spurs has caught Sarri’s attention.

A long hunt for a successor

The Italian coach has been linked with the Tottenham job since Jose Mourinho was sacked by the club in April.

Spurs are yet to find a successor to the Portuguese manager. The likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Hansi Flick, and now Conte, have rejected the north London club.

Mauricio Pochettino has also floated with a return to Tottenham. But as reported by Fabrizio Romano, the PSG manager will now remain with the Ligue 1 giants this summer despite reports of a fallout between the Argentine and the club’s board.

A short and sweet spell in England

Sarri spent just one season in the Premier League with Chelsea.

The former Napoli boss claim third in the standings and won the UEFA Europa League following a 4-1 victory over Arsenal before being joining Juventus in the summer of 2019.

Despite a successful season with Chelsea, supporters of the west London side weren’t keen on the Italian coach.

Sarri dropped N’Golo Kante from the first team and made some questionable signings in the form of Jorginho and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Tottenham could have to resort to Sarri

With managers dropping out of the race to take over Tottenham, the north London club are running short of options.

And Sarri could well be the club’s only hope at this stage of the year.

With Erik Ten Hag signing a new deal with Ajax and the likes of Gareth Southgate and Roberto Martinez unlikely to consider an approach after Euro 2020, the Italian manager could well be Spurs’ final hope of securing an experienced manager ahead of next season.
