On Sunday, Tottenham Hotspur crashed out of the FA Cup with a 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace. Just days earlier, Chelsea eliminated Spurs from the League Cup.
In the span of a week, Tottenham saw their best chances at ending their lengthy silverware drought slip away, but the comments of Mauricio Pochettino after the setbacks will incense Tottenham fans.
After the defeat at Selhurst Park, Pochettino said Spurs did not need to measure their success by trophies, but rather the attainment of Champions League status.
“We are going to create a debate that to win a trophy is going to help the club,” he said in comments reported by the Guardian. “I don’t agree with that. That only builds your ego. In reality the most important thing is being consistently in the top four and playing in the Champions League.”

Simply put, Pochettino’s comments are disrespectful to the Tottenham fanbase. For a club that last lifted a trophy in 2008, surely the cup competitions should be a priority.
And although no Spurs supporter will disagree that securing a top four finish is invaluable, one cannot compare the satisfaction of playing in the Champions League to the joy of winning a trophy.
The disappointment of exiting both domestic cup competitions in the same week is still raw, and Pochettino’s brash comments illustrating his indifference will do little to quell the anger of Spurs fans.
Although the Argentine manager is still revered in north London, Tottenham supporters have every right to be incensed by Mauricio Pochettino’s dismissal of Spurs’ cup exits.
