There are less than two weeks to go in the transfer window and Tottenham remain without a signing, yet manager Mauricio Pochettino is, in public at least, keeping his cool and insisting that there is no need to panic.
Whilst the likes of Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish and Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha have been linked, by The Telegraph and the Mirror respectively, no deal has yet been completed and fans are beginning to get riled as they remain one of only two Premier League clubs yet to spring into transfer action.
“It’s not just players in, it is players out too. In and out, we must sort it in the next 12 or 13 days. The deadline day is so early compared to the rest of Europe, which is not going to help a team like us, but that is what has been decided. That is why we must make the best decision for us. I am not panicking. I don’t panic in football. I panic for different reasons in in life, but not football.”
The club remain without a convincing alternative to Harry Kane, whilst depth is needed in midfield and defence, particularly as injuries mount up and rumours persist that players could depart, such as Mousa Dembele, as reported by the Daily Mail, and Toby Alderweireld, as claimed by the Daily Star.
“Every season is the same, talking about adding more quality. Every single situation is different; people have different challenges, desire, objectives and motivations. It’s always in and out and that balance is very important. We are in a period that is not easy but we are working hard and must not complain. We are trying to arrive [at the start of the season] in the best condition.”
With a new stadium on the horizon, the club cannot afford to let their role as a top four side slip. At the start of the summer it looked as though a good transfer window could turn them into title contenders, yet now whilst the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal strengthen, it looks as though their place in the Champions League may even be under threat.
Daniel Levy must show the ambition to match that of his coach, Pochettino, and spend to bring in the targets that the Lilywhites are desperately crying out for to add to what is already an extremely exciting squad with bags of potential.
Tottenham have the opportunity to be pushing for the title, but the club must be prepared to invest to bring that success and compete with the big spenders in the north-west and bring silverware to the brand new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
