Mauricio Pochettino reacts to Tottenham fans’ gesture during 5-0 win

Mauricio Pochettino has, in comments reported by Football London, paid tribute to the Tottenham Hotspur supporters after being asked about the fans singing his name during the 5-0 win over Red Star Belgrade.

Spurs put their recent woes behind them to produce an excellent display in the Champions League. Harry Kane and Son Heung-min both bagged braces, while Erik Lamela got the other during the second-half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It was the kind of victory that Tottenham definitely needed. And it appears that Pochettino received the kind of backing that he needed. The supporters inside the ground sang his name to signify that they remain behind him.

And Pochettino insisted after the game that the feeling was completely mutual as he was asked about the gesture from the fans.

“The fans are fantastic,” he said, as reported by Football London. “Of course I heard their support. The most important is to support the players and the team. I say thank you and I want to be grateful to them. I think the same love is in both ways.”

“I feel that they love me and I think they need to feel that I love them too. But I think always the most important thing is the team, the squad, the players, they are the principal actors.”

Right man to lead turnaround

While there has been criticism of Pochettino, he does not appear to be the figure that Spurs fans predominantly blame for their struggles.

He has done an incredible job in North London. And the fans have not forgotten that. Unfortunately, his tenure has seen expectations rise dramatically. So their current rut has been difficult for many to digest.

The win against Red Star does not address all of the problems, by any means. But it perhaps shows that Pochettino is the only man to lead the side through the tricky period to come in the coming months.
