Mauricio Pochettino has lauded Serge Aurier’s performance during Tottenham Hotspur’s emphatic 4-0 win against Crystal Palace, in comments reported by Football London.
Aurier was making his first appearance of the season on Saturday. The 26-year-old told Bal des Productions earlier this week that he was ready to leave Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during the summer, but of course, he remains on Spurs’s books after the window.
And he staked a massive claim to establish himself as Tottenham’s first-choice right-back moving forward as Pochettino’s men won 4-0 against the Eagles. He provided two assists inside the first 25 minutes.
And after the victory, Pochettino suggested that he was delighted with the Ivory Coast international’s performance before adding what he now wants to see from the defender.
“I think he was very happy. We were very happy too. I think the performance was great,” he said, as reported by Football London.
“First half was fantastic, his concentration and focus. Now he needs to show and be consistent. It’s not only one game and the second game the focus and intensity start to drop.”
Aurier also deserves credit for helping Tottenham keep their first clean sheet of the season in the win over Roy Hodgson’s side.
Aurier and Danny Rose were perhaps handed the toughest tasks defensively as they looked to keep both Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha quiet. But they managed to ensure that neither could have much of an influence on the game.
And if Aurier can build on that performance, then perhaps the Spurs fans will left be delighted that he did not go anywhere during the summer.
