Tottenham Hotspur defeated West Ham United at the London Stadium yesterday in what was a comfortable evening. Few West Ham players imposed themselves on the game at all, with Tottenham deservedly coming away with the victory.
If, however, there was one player who did impress for West Ham it was no surprise who it was yet again. Declan Rice had a solid game in the heart of the Hammers midfield.
Despite being often outnumbered he put in a decent performance belying his age. At just 19-years-old he looked the natural leader for West Ham and is playing at a level way beyond his years.
However, West Ham know they must tie him down to a new deal. Just this week, The Sun reported that Chelsea are willing to give Rice £40,000-a-week in order to head to Stamford Bridge.
Surely, after seeing him up close, Mauricio Pochettino will be interested as well.
Tottenham need to bring in cover at centre-back and central midfield. Rice performs both functions with relative ease. Eric Dier also provides such options, but Rice looks like a definite upgrade on the England international.
His situation at West Ham looks difficult and he would solve plenty of problems at Tottenham. Rice must surely be on their agenda.
