One of the talking points after Tottenham’s hard-fought 1-0 win over Brighton last night was the introduction of forgotten man Vincent Janssen.
The one time £18.6 million (Sky Sports) signing made his first appearance for Spurs since coming on against Chelsea in August 2017.
With Harry Kane injured, Mauricio Pochettino has brought him back into the fold and had some interesting things to say to Football.London after yesterday’s game regarding Janssen’s return.
Pochettino made it clear that Janssen’s return should not be a surprise considering he spoke of his return to the first-team fold after the January transfer window.
“I think I told you and no one can be surprised. In January when we decided to involve him again in the squad again, he was a player that had the same possibility as the others…
“I don’t know why it is going to surprise people, what I told you four or five months ago, that is the reality that happened today. I am not a liar, I am not a person that needs to lie to you or my fans. He is part of the team and I am going to decide whether to use or not.”
Tottenham failed to find the former Fenerbahce loanee a new team in January and subsequently, Pochettino was ready to use him again.
Looking back at the quotes below, from February as told to Sky Sports, Pochettino clearly has a lot of time still for the Dutchman. Once again his comments will go a long way to endear himself to the Tottenham faithful who already love him.
“That is my decision – that he is going to be involved in the first team from today, and he is going to be like another player involved.
“The most important thing now is to treat him as a person in the best way.
“He is a person and not a chair, or a sofa, or furniture, and he will be involved with the first team and try to do his best, and try to get fit and be competitive.”
The Tottenham fans gave Janssen a rousing reception, even if Eric Dier found it amusing, and Pochettino’s honesty is once again appreciated.
Tottenham can rest easy, knowing they can trust their manager.
