Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino insists that the size of the club’s squad wasn’t the reason behind the defeat to Ajax and feels it was “terrible circumstances’ that he couldn’t name a single attacker on his bench.
Spurs were beaten at home 1-0 by Dutch giants Ajax in the first leg of a Champions League semi-final and have plenty of work to do when they travel to Amsterdam next week.
The North London club were without suspended attacker Heung-Min Son for the first leg and Vincent Janssen was ineligible, while Harry Kane and Erik Lamela were both sidelined through injury.
It left the Spurs boss completely short of options and it was two defenders who entered the action in the second-half, despite them trailing in the game.
Pochettino believes that his team were just unfortunate with absentees and it’s not related to the size of the squad.
“I think terrible circumstances happened,” Pochettino responded when asked about the bench against Ajax and a potential squad depth problem, as cited by Football.London.
“It was a difficult moment that you must accept. I don’t think it’s about squad depth. I cannot complain about that.
“I think we need to accept the reality and that was our reality. A little bit unlucky in some situations.”

TBR’s View:
Spurs were unfortunate going into the Ajax game with absentees, but there is no doubt they have to strengthen in the summer after going back-to-back transfer windows without signing a single player.
Son’s return for the second leg will massively boost the North London club and he’s been a shining light during Kane’s injury problem.
The attacking department could do with some strengthening over the summer, but improving the centre of the park should be a priority too.
Mousa Dembele’s void is yet to be filled sine his January exit and the current Spurs group are perhaps overachieving this season by reaching the Champions League semi-final.
