Mauricio Pochettino, as reported by The Independent, has been singing the praises of Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho this week. Spurs take on the England international in the Champions League tonight and the Argentine is not surprised by Sancho’s brilliant form this season.
Of course, that will explain why Tottenham were reportedly keen on signing the player when it became clear he was looking for a way out of Manchester City.
“We knew very well that he was capable to do what he is doing now with game time. We have seen the quality that he was showing in Manchester City or in his national team. I think we were talking in the last few years that he was a massive prospect to be a very good player.
“Of course he is showing now in Germany that he can cope with the pressure to play in the Bundesliga or in the Champions League. And not surprise me. His talent is there and he’s a very talented player.”
A report from ESPN suggested that Sancho was hoping to join Tottenham in the summer of 2017. The report suggested the winger felt he would be in the first-team picture at Tottenham and wanted to return to London, his hometown.

Unfortunately, the report also explained exactly why Spurs did not manage to sign him. Difficulties regarding compensation and the release of his registration meant Tottenham decided they would not make a move for Sancho at that time. Instead, they were prepared to wait and see what transpired. A week after that report, Sancho joined Dortmund. The Independent have since reported City would not sell to a Premier League rival. Tottenham would need to wait for Sancho’s contract to expire.
Sancho will now be hoping to put Tottenham to the sword in Europe. His 13 assists and eight goals for the Bundesliga have certainly proven he is capable now he’s playing regular first-team football. Tottenham might just regret having to play the waiting game.
