Mauricio Pochettino told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football that he is desperate to see Jose Mourinho win a trophy as Tottenham Hotspur manager – after failing to do so during his five-year reign as Spurs boss before Mourinho’s appointment.
Tottenham have made an excellent start to the 2020-21 season under Mourinho, sitting in third place in the Premier League table and winning five of their six Europa League matches. They have also reached the last eight of the Carabao Cup.
Highlights include a 6-1 win over Manchester United and both Harry Kane and Son Heung-min in the form of their lives. Mourinho has added a nastiness to Spurs that was perhaps missing under Pochettino towards the end of his tenure.
Asked about Mourinho’s Tottenham, Pochettino stated he is hopeful Spurs can win something under the former Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Inter Milan manager – urging Mourinho to put the “cherry on top of the cake”.

“The man who replaced me [Jose Mourinho] is a good friend. A manager who always treated me very wel,” Pochettino said. “I feel it is only what I can wish, because I love Tottenham and I know Jose and want the best for him, is to try to win.
“But this journey missed to win a title. That is what we missed. To put the cherry on the top of the cake. I hope in the future it will be possible to win a trophy with Jose because it would be amazing for the fans and this group of players.”
TBR’s view – Can Mourinho win a trophy with Spurs?
Spurs are beginning to iron out their inconsistencies. They have lost just two of their 13 league and cup outings, but failed to keep a clean sheet in their first nine games – conceding 13 goals in the process including three against West Ham.
But the last four games have shown more of a Mourinho-like consistency. Just two goals conceded in those four games, Spurs have looked much more solid. Remaining defensively intact, but continuing to score goals will see Spurs go far.
Can they win a trophy? They seem more potent and potentially boast a better chance to do so, more than they ever did with Pochettino. A Carabao Cup will be in Mourinho’s sights first of all.
