Matty Longstaff has told the Evening Chronicle that he could leave Newcastle United this summer on loan, with manager Steve Bruce yet to make a decision over the up-and-coming midfield starlet.

Longstaff, 19, has followed in his brother’s footsteps this summer by starring in pre-season. Indeed, the teenage midfielder came on against French side St. Etienne, and scored the winner seconds later.

Picking the ball up on the edge of the box after good work from new signing Allan Saint-Maximin, Longstaff took one touch before curling an excellent effort off the bar to win the match 2-1 at St. James’ Park.

Speaking after the win against St. Etienne to the Chronicle, Longstaff said he could still leave Newcastle this summer on loan with a decision yet to be made, but Longstaff does state that he wants to remain on Tyneside.

“I just want to get a chance here but he will see,” Longstaff said. “I don’t know if I will be heading out on loan.  Hopefully, if I stick around I will be able to show what I can do.

“I can’t thank Steve Bruce and his assistants enough. They help me every day after training and tell me where to improve.”

TBR’s view – Newcastle should stick with Longstaff

Yes, Newcastle have been linked with bringing in a new midfielder this summer, after losing Mo Diame after his contract expired on Tyneside. But is it crucial?

Bruce has been left with just Jonjo Shelvey, Sean Longstaff, Ki Sung-yueng, Isaac Hayden and now younger brother Longstaff. They could do with another midfielder, but giving Longstaff a chance would be more beneficial.

He showed on Saturday that he boasts the talent and technique. Positional awareness, confidence and an eye for goal are all traits of his. Bringing through a youngster rather than the likes of James McCarthy is better business.
