Mattia De Sciglio praised Tottenham Hotspur before but not their leaky defence

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on a move for Juventus defender Mattia De Sciglio, according to reports.

TuttoMercatoWeb is reporting that Tottenham could offer the Bianconeri Danny Rose in a swap deal to ensure they get their hands on the versatile defender.

The player, who was once dubbed the ‘next Paolo Maldini’ (ESPN) can play in all three defensive positions and with Spurs needing strengthening across the back-line it is no wonder Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen.

As for De Sciglio, he is in fact a fan of Tottenham. The Italian defender faced off against Spurs in the 2017-18 Champions League and after drawing the first-leg 2-2 in Turin (Juventus went on to win the tie 4-3 on aggregate) he spoke about Spurs, as reported in Goal, in glowing terms.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult game. Tottenham are very strong, especially in midfield and attack.

“I think we made a mistake when we were 2-0 up. We started to defend too deep allowing them to have the ball easily in midfield. It’s a pity because we wasted a very important lead, but I’m sure that we can win at Wembley.

“We know it will be difficult again because we are facing strong opponents, but we must remain confident, especially after watching what we did in the first 10 minutes.”

It is, however, worth mentioning that De Sciglio did not mention the Tottenham defence when praising the Premier League side. Clearly he felt that there was room for improvement at the back. The Tottenham defence on that day was Serge Aurier, Davinson Sanchez, Jan Vertonghen, and Ben Davies, all of whom are currently still at Spurs, so De Sciglio must back himself to improve that area.

Tottenham fans would certainly hope that is the case if the club can secure his signature this summer.
