Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk put in a superb display in Wednesday night’s Champions League last-16 first leg against Inter Milan.

The Reds centre-back helped his side record a 2-0 win over the Serie A champions ahead of the return leg in March.

Van Dijk ensured that Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko didn’t get a sniff of goal, and saw Liverpool through their shaky second-half start.

The Dutchman won the Player of the Match award and took to Instagram with a photo of him holding the accolade.

Fellow Netherlands international Matthijs de Ligt was among those who responded.

The one-time reported Liverpool target commented with two emojis – a ‘clapping hands’ and a ‘raising hands’.

Van Dijk has been so good for Liverpool that he has made his £75million transfer fee seem like a bargain.

It didn’t take long for him to make his mark following his arrival to Anfield from Southampton in 2017.

He quickly transformed the then-shaky Reds defence into a solid unit and, eventually, a trophy-winning juggernaut.

Jurgen Klopp’s charges have won the Champions League, the Premier League and the Club World Cup thanks in part to Van Dijk’s efforts.

Last season, the 30-year-old suffered a long-term injury, and Liverpool missed him terribly as they laboured to a top-four finish.

But this term, Van Dijk is back and shining once again, with the Reds still in contention for all four trophies.

Can the Anfield colossus lead his side to more silverware this year?
