Matt Upson excited to see Martin Odegaard in an Arsenal shirt
Former Arsenal and England defender, Matthew Upson, believes Martin Odegaard can succeed at Arsenal after signing for the Gunners this week.
Odegaard has made the move to North London on loan, joining from Real Madrid until the end of the season.
The Norwegian will be hoping for a similar impact with the Gunners to that he had with Real Sociedad last term. He played over 30 times in La Liga, contributing in both goals and assists for the Spanish outfit.
And Upson, speaking to Five Live Sport yesterday, believes it is a huge opportunity for Odegaard to go out and prove himself.
“You look at him as a player and wonder why he’s not established himself yet. To watch, the way he receives the ball, he’s so entertaining but is he putting up the hard numbers to make him standout to the top managers? To make them look and think his productivity is what they need,” Upson said.
“I think it’s a real opportunity in my eyes for him to go out and show he is a top player at a big club.”
Odegaard could get his debut this weekend when Arsenal face Manchester United in the Premier League. Mikel Arteta saying in his press conference that he has settled in well, although he refused to be drawn on if he’d start his new man.
TBR View: Time to shine for Odegaard, and he can do it
Odegaard proved last season he has what it takes to be a success. The pressure on him when he joined Madrid must have been huge, given his tender age and obvious ability.
Now 22, he’s at a stage where he’s got some football under his belt and he’ll be ready to kick on. Arsenal, as Upson says, could be the perfect platform for him to do just that.
Gunners fans are excited by Odegaard, and rightly so.
