Aston Villa defender Matt Targett reckons the club aren’t far off hitting top form, but need to be more ruthless in front of goal.
The Midlands club have given a good account of themselves so far in the Premier League, but sit 18th in the table after struggling to see out games.
Dean Smith’s side have thrown away leads against Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Burnley so far and could easily be in the top half of the table.
Some have put that down to inexperience and a lack of focus, but defender Targett believes Villa simply must put away more of their chances.
He told the club’s official website: “We can take some real positives from the season so far. We haven’t got the wins that we would have wanted but we’re not far off at all.
“We need to get more ruthless and then I’m sure the results will come.”
Given their struggles in keeping clean sheets, Villa certainly do need to be a bit more clinical.
Only on two occasions have they managed to shut out the opposition this season, so the onus could well be on the attacking players to improve their cutting edge.
Wesley in particular must up his game having had time now to settle in.
The Brazilian scored 17 in all competitions last term for Club Brugge and clearly has an eye for goal – perhaps when he gets into the groove, the team as a unit will be able to see out games more confidently.
