Matt Le Tissier suggests Manchester City would be ideal next club for one player

Matt Le Tissier has told Stadium Astro he thinks Southampton striker Danny Ings could be the ideal replacement for Sergio Aguero at Manchester City – and is confident that he has enough quality for the Champions League.

Ings, 28, has entered the final 18 months of his current contract at Manchester City – with The Telegraph claiming he is holding off on signing a new deal with the Saints, as he wants to be playing Champions League football.

His form has not matched his output last season, scoring eight in 19 Premier League outings – after netting 22 in 38 league and cup appearances. Meanwhile, Aguero is out of contract at the end of the season at The Etihad.

The Argentine has spent much of the season on the sidelines through injury and City could do with a replacement – even if Aguero stays. Le Tissier, a Southampton legend, thinks Ings would be ideal for Pep Guardiola’s side.

“If the offer is big enough, the club will sell,” Le Tissier said. “He’s got enough ability to play in the Champions League. Manchester City might be the one with Sergio Aguero coming to the end [of his contract].

“They will be looking for somebody to fill that void,” Le Tissier said on Stadium Astro, when discussing the £20million (BBC) man. “I would be interested to see how many goals Ings would score in a City side.”

TBR’s view – Ings at Manchester City makes sense

Ings will know that if he does swap Southampton for one of the Premier League’s big six sides, then he probably will have to await his turn and sit on the bench. A return to Liverpool is unlikely, as they prefer to sign younger players.

Chelsea have numerous options, Jamie Vardy continues to prove age is just a number at Leicester, Tottenham have Harry Kane and Arsenal boast both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, among others.

Manchester United have Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani, but one is out of form and the other is quite old – Old Trafford would be a decent move. But City, with Aguero departing and Gabriel Jesus inconsistent, is perfect.
