Scorer of two more goals against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup, Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Matt Doherty is having the season of his life at Molineux.
The Republic of Ireland international has played like a man possessed this term and has established himself as one of the team’s most important players.
An ever-present in the side, Doherty has been a pillar of consistency at right wing-back.

Not only has he been solid defensively, but he has offered a remarkable attacking threat too, evidenced by the six goals and four assists he’s provided in all competitions.
Before a ball was kicked this season, not many would have expected Doherty to be arguably the top performing right-back by February.
Surely if he continues to play in such a manner, then it will be very difficult for the PFA to look beyond him for the Team of the Season.
Just who even stacks up?
At the moment, it’s difficult to see who could possibly make it in over Doherty.
Perhaps his biggest threat would be Trent Alexander-Arnold, but the Liverpool man has seen a lot less minutes due to injury.

Cesar Azpilicueta of Chelsea has been relatively solid, although by his own lofty standards it hasn’t been his greatest season for the Blues.
Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka could be in with a shout. The Englishman has emerged as one of the league’s best young talents this term.
Then there’s Ricardo Pereira, who has stood out for Leicester City with some good attacking displays for an inconsistent side. The Portuguese actually has the highest average rating of all the player mentioned on WhoScored with 7.34 (compared to Doherty’s 7.27).

That said, it feels as though Doherty has been outperforming all of his rivals. If he can just maintain his form through until the end of the season, then he will surely secure his inclusion ahead of Pereira in the 2018/19 Team of the Season.
