It is hard to believe it now, considering how important he is to Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United team, but Mateusz Klich once looked surplus to requirements at Elland Road.
Leeds signed the Polish midfielder from FC Twente in a deal reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post to be in the region of £1.5 million back in 2017.
But he struggled for regular football in his first season at the club. Thomas Christiansen was clearly not a big fan of the player and Klich was loaned out to FC Utrecht in Holland in January 2018.

It could have been the end for Klich, but when Bielsa arrived the Argentine immediately identified the Pole as a potentially crucial part of his Leeds United team and Klich has been a mainstay since.
Speaking to the Leeds United official Facebook page this week, Klich made it clear that he was determined to prove people wrong when he returned from that loan stint.
“I was very determined. I just wanted to come back and prove that some people were wrong. I was basically forced to go away because I had no chance to play anymore.
“As a football player the only thing you want is to play games. I tried to be in good form and play good at Utrecht, which I did, then I came back to Leeds United and proved that someone was wrong.”
Now, the 29-year-old is one of the most consistent performers in the Championship and is on an incredible run of consecutive starts for Bielsa’s side.
Was it not for Bielsa’s arrival, who knows if Klich would still be at Elland Road today?
All that is for sure is that Leeds United fans are pleased the Argentine saw in Klich what those preceding him could not.
