Mateusz Hewelt’s Everton career appears to be coming to an end

At the start of the summer, Everton’s young goalkeeper Mateusz Hewelt looked set to be the club’s third-choice stopper. Jordan Pickford was the undisputed number one, with Maarten Stekelenburg recovered from injury to be the club’s number two and Joel Robles moving on.

But with doubts over the Dutchman’s fitness, many felt Hewelt might be getting some time on the Everton bench this season. Last term, he made the match-day squad for a Europa League tie against Apollon Limassol.

So there was every chance that hewelt might have been on his way to a first-team debut for Everton.

However, a few months down the line and that is clearly not the case.

Everton got Stekelenburg back to full fitness, whilst they also signed Joao Virginia from Arsenal. The Portuguese talent’s good form has seen him become the number three choice at Goodison Park.

But Hewelt is not even fourth-choice. He has been replaced as the starting option in the under-23s, when Virginia is unavailable, by 19-year-old Joe Hilton. The former Manchester City youth player arrived in 2016 and, at 6ft 5ins, stands an imposing figure between the posts.

For Hewelt, it means a demotion to fifth-choice at Everton. With his contract at the club expiring in the summer, it seems his time at Everton is coming to an end.

At 23, he remains young for a goalkeeper. Hopefully, he can build a career away from Finch Farm in the future.
