'Massive': Rio Ferdinand thinks Newcastle have made a truly 'huge move'

Rio Ferdinand has described Newcastle United signing Chris Wood as a “huge move” strategically.

The Magpies were in dire need of bolstering their attacking ranks last week.

Newcastle have struggled in front of goal this season, so a new striker was high up on their wishlist.

Why The 2021 African Cup of Nations Is So Controversial

Then, top scorer Callum Wilson suffered an injury, making the need for a new forward even more pressing.

Newcastle moved quickly to sign Wood from Burnley, the Magpies triggering his £25million release clause.

The 30-year-old was a key player for the Clarets, having finished as their top Premier League scorer in three seasons.

Wood netted at least 10 goals in each of his four top-flight seasons with Burnley.

In addition to bolstering their own ranks, Newcastle have also weakened a direct relegation rival.

Ferdinand, speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE, commented on Burnley’s situation before giving his thoughts on the Wood move.

‘Burnley, man, they need to start getting some points on the board,” he said. “They’ve had a lot of games cancelled as well.

Co-host Chris Howson added: “Losing Chris Wood could be the difference.”

“Massive,” replied Ferdinand. “I think that’s strategically, from Newcastle’s point of view, a huge move.

“Taking the main goal threat, the main problem cause for Burnley and putting him in their squad.”

Ferdinand then deemed Newcastle’s £25million outlay “a lot of money”.

Wood is what Newcastle need at this moment in time – TBR View

Wood might not have been the glamorous marquee signing some Newcastle fans envisaged after the takeover.

However, he’s what they need at this moment in time.

Newcastle are in real danger of suffering relegation, and Wood is a great player for both the lower reaches of the Premier League and in the Championship.

He has plenty of experience and a proven track record in both scenarios.

And Newcastle’s final fixture of the season is away at Burnley – so taking Wood from them could have huge repercussions come May.
