'Massive player': National media wowed by 20-year-old Liverpool man's display for his country
Liverpool loanee Neco Williams put in a superb display for Wales on Thursday night.
The Reds academy graduate helped the Dragons beat Austria 2-1 in their World Cup play-off semi-final.
Williams lined up in an unfamiliar role on the left-hand side ahead of a three-man defence.
The Fulham on-loan man had full licence to surge up the flank and join the Wales attack.
And he did incredibly well, earning himself 8 out of 10 in the Wales Online player ratings article.
“Typically brilliant going forward,” they wrote.
“Worked himself into a couple of really promising moments with some classy touches.
“His composure on the ball goes well beyond his years or experience.
“Made a total of five brilliant runs. Already a massive, massive player for his country.”
Williams has won 18 caps for Wales, showing just how important he is to the national team.
Likewise, he is shining for Fulham, with 10 appearances and four goal contributions under his belt.
Williams wasn’t getting much game time at Liverpool, so he had to make the move away from Anfield.
It’s unfortunate that the 20-year-old had the incredible Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of him.
“It’s been the best decision he’s made,” the Liverpool Echo quoted Wales manager Robert Page as saying.
“He [Neco] had to force the loan deal in the end.
“Absolutely, it’s the right thing to do for himself. He’s got to think of himself and his career.”
Now, he stands on the brink of promotion to the Premier League with Fulham and a first World Cup for Wales since 1958.
