Mason Mount watched Luka Modric at Tottenham, with the Chelsea midfielder telling Amazon Prime Sport that the Croatian was one of his big inspirations as he grew up.

Mount has established himself as one of the finest midfielders in the Premier League. He has now played over 150 times for the Blues in all competitions, helping them win a number of trophies, including the Champions League.

Unsurprisingly, Frank Lampard was one of the players the 23-year-old really looked up to. He was coming through the ranks at a time when Lampard was on his way towards becoming the club’s record goalscorer.

Meanwhile, there was also plenty taken from the midfield that inspired Barcelona to so much success. But interestingly, there was also an acknowledgement of the respect he had for one of the best players Tottenham have had over the last few decades.

“Lampard was always a big idol of mine. Iniesta and Xavi when they were playing at Barcelona. The tiki-taka era I used to watch both people on YouTube, I loved watching them. And Modric as well when he was at Tottenham, I watched them four players very closely as a midfielder and as someone who likes to score goals,” he told Amazon Prime Sport.

Tottenham had looked at signing Modric for a second time this season, according to reports. It came with the 36-year-old previously being set to be out of contract at Real Madrid this summer.

However, Modric now looks to spend the rest of his career at the Bernabeu. AS in Spain has now reported that he has extended his contract until 2023. And there is an option to then stay until 2024.

Clearly, Modric remains one of the best in the world. His outrageous pass in the Champions League tie with Chelsea highlighted just how good he continues to be.

It is a shame that it is now unlikely that he will return to the Premier League before his career concludes.
