Chelsea star Mason Mount has named Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah ahead of his Euro 2020-winning teammate Jorginho as his pick for the 2021 Player of the Year award.

Mount was part of the Chelsea side that won the Champions League in the summer. He was also in the England squad that made it all the way into the final of Euro 2020, where the Three Lions lost to Jorginho’s Italy.

The Italian midfielder entered the Ballon d’Or debate after his hugely successful campaign and he even finished higher than Salah in the rankings. The two could go head to head for the Player of the Year award now, and Mount has picked his winner.

The Chelsea star, surprisingly, believes Salah should get the award. He even went on to label the Egyptian as a big player who steps up in big games and scores big goals.

Mason Mount: Mo Salah deserves the Player of the Year award

The Chelsea midfielder told Amazon Prime Video: “There’s a few, I think, that you can put out there, but I think, at the moment, the amount of goals he’s scoring, the assists he’s getting, I think Mo Salah would definitely be up there.

“He’s a big, big player who turns up in the big games and scores big goals. As a player, you want to be able to do that.

“He’s setting the bar very, very high at the moment. So I think he definitely will be up there.”

Salah has been absolutely incredible for Liverpool since he joined them but he has pushed his game up to a whole new level this season.

The Egyptian, since the start of this campaign, has scored 22 goals and has provided nine assists in just 25 appearances in all competitions. That is an outrageous return for a winger and he is the favourite to win every individual award out there for his performances this term.

It will be interesting to see the number of goals Salah will end up with at the end of this season. At this rate, he’ll smash most goalscoring records, but whether that will be enough to push Liverpool past league leaders Manchester City is a different story.
